glorious excess - modern vanitas

modern works that relate...(click "read more" to see)

EDIT:

POSTED 2 MINUTES AGO BY XENITH Mike do you not think its pretty ironic that the only people who are more likely to be able to afford these peaces of art are in fact what you and many other artists are protesting against within your work? NO ROADS LEFT.COM

MS ANSWER: yes and no...the wealthiest people in the world, who are the only ones who could afford a piece such as FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, are not celebrities of the sort that my works focus on. my series isn't about the likes of warren buffet. then again, my prices are (not so coincidentally) in the range a red carpet / in touch / E! / OK! celeb might spend. if that happens, we will all be able to enjoy the irony together.

PS, i know about the noroadsleft site. although i doubt we can make it a single, i hope to someday play the song live. it's really just a matter of my voice being up to it: that song takes a ton out of me, and if my voice isn't 100% going into it, i can't make it through properly. plus, it might kill my voice for the songs that follow it...anyway, we'll see what happens. thanks for the support!

someone i've never heard of, but found today:

and two that many of us are already very familiar with:

mark ryden (from his "blood" series)

and damien hirst. the piece is called FOR THE LOVE OF GOD and is made of real platinum, diamonds, and human teeth. i understand it cost £15,000,000 to £20,000,000 to make, and sold for £50,000,000. that's almost 100 million US dollars.

mike shinoda changed my life I used to be unsure of who I was but from listening to his LP tracks as well as his Fort Minor tracks he confirmed to me who I really am. Michael Kenji Shinoda is God to me if he told me to shoot myself (though we all know he wouldn't) I would do it. Mike always talks about how u shouldn't get caught up in peoples perceptios of you and that's how I try to live my life. No Roads Left could single handedly be the greatest recorded song ever created. Mike someday I hope to meet you and tell you this but until then I will buy anything with your name on it or has anything to do with you.

If it's played live, then I think the beauty of it will shock many people. Many people will spread the word about it if they hear it live and I'm sure many other people will find out about the song. I just think that there's other ways to spread this song other than making it a single and I believe that performing it live is the best way. It would be so awesome for people to experience this song for the first time by hearing it live. I'm sure it would change them. I will hope that this happens for many people at PR2008 this year. You can do it Mike. Good luck at Projekt Rev this year. - Ryan

I agree with everything that noroadsleft.com says except for the idea of making it a single. If it was made a single, it would ruin the fun of it. One of the awesome things about the song is that it's a b-side. It's so rare to see such a good song as a b-side. It makes it so awesome that not a lot of people know about it. I don't think the secrecy of it should be ruined by making it a single. It should be a reward for anyone who manages to discover it. It's just not the kind of song that should be a single. People should find it for themselves. In order for this song to get the recognition it deserves, it simply needs to be played live.

I'll still enjoy PR again this year if it's not played but I'll be a little disappointed just because I have a strong feeling that you can perform it live now and that you will this year. I hope my premonition is right. This song doesn't need to be a single. With all due respect to noroadsleft.com, I think that it's a stupid idea. However, I do think that it probably could have and should have been on the album. It truly is one of the best songs you guys have ever made. It's affected me like few songs have and I'm sure it's done the same for many other people.

If you're really not ready to do it this year, then it's ok. I know it would be one of the biggest challenges for you as a singer but I believe if you performed it at the right time (the right order in the set list), you could do it. I'll once again be hoping that you perform it this year at Projekt Rev. I hope that those two set lists which have popped up on some LP websites are true. If they are, then maybe you guys are already planning to perform it.

However, now things have changed. It's one year later. My whole point of this post is to let you know that I believe in you. I'm not sure what everyone else thinks but I know that you can perform this song live. I understand that it's one of the most challenging Linkin Park songs to sing. To be honest, I'm a singer. I've done a lot of vocal covers for LP songs including this one and I definitely think it's one of the toughest because of the high notes and the quick changes in pitch and rhythm.

I completely understand why it wasn't performed at PR2007. You guys were still debuting songs like Hands Held High and Shadow of the Day. And obviously, I knew that you guys wouldn't play No Roads Left before Valentines Day or In Between which debuted at the 2008 US Tour. Therefore, I didn't mind that it wasn't played at PR2007. It was more important to learn how to play the songs from the album first before focusing on a b-side. I'm also sure that many people would want to hear songs from the album first and wouldn't have been familiar with No Roads Left.

By the time Projekt Revolution 2007 came around, I was practically praying for you to perform the song live. I was trying to spread the word on almost every website and telling people to request that you perform NRL at PR2007. Now that I look back, that was probably stupid. After all, It was the first tour for Minutes to Midnight and you guys were just learning how to play some of the songs from the album. It was way too soon to ask for No Roads Left live. I also didn't understand at that time how you felt about performing it live.

Hello Mike. Although I understand that the chance of you reading this is 1 in 10000000000, I'm going to post this anyway. When I first heard No Roads Left (which was on May 15 2007 when the album came out), I knew right away that the song was possibly one of the best songs ever made by Linkin Park. I would have never guessed at that point that one of the best songs would be a song without Chester in it. As I grew to like the song more and more, I realized that it was probably one of the top 5 or 10 songs that you guys have made including all the b-sides from prior albums.

Isn't deviantart a fun site? I love going on there. If you haven't already, you should really check out all the pixel art. It's everything from the more detailed, scenic drawings to game sprites. People make some wild looking isometric game maps and cities, too. (my DA: theartbook35, in case anyone wants to look me up)

I think, that the most important is Mike!!! If he says he can't make it through propely and that song takes a ton out of him, we should accept it and wait! There are so MANY fantastic songs in Mike's performance, and I am satisfied with them! :D And Mike, You can not risk losing your voice!!!!!!! NEVER!!! ;) So I'll wait, when you'll be ready!

You know No roads left is really great song) I agree that it can be difficult for you to perform it) live) But maybe you could make an experiment with it. Give it Chester and let him perform it) I don't want to offend you, I'm still your fan) I'm just (I think that we all are kinda worried about you voice) worried about it all. But If you perform it live, I will support you)))))))))) And don't get angry about that sentence concerning the experiment) I was just kidding) I understand that it means lots of things to you) and don't wanna offend you anyhow) Fiat Mike Shinoda)

    "FAINTS" Thanks Mike :) ...wow.

I gave up on art a long time ago when (in a slight spin-off from this topic) 'artists' where getting credit for work that didn't take any effort at all. Gaining fame and fortune with an easy impact.

Take Tracey Emin, who in 1999 released 'My Bed' - for me this threw contemporary art out the window and into the ranks of quick wins and easy money.

After this my own art tutor collected beer bottles, filled each with trash and presented them spelling out his name... he won awards and gained fame. This made me loose passion for my own art so its inspiring to see you and many others relate and retaliate with your work especially when I can afford it!
